I kind of enjoy seeing Ben ever so slightly shitting on the grift
It would be better if he just came out and said it instead of back handing it though
Make this thread funny again.
The US will soon ban jpg exports and build a strategic jpg stockpile
No AI could write Full Burn
Chris Roberts’, vision of the game included a fully mobile autonomous reactive NPC population “full of characters”. CryEngine / Lumberyard and the current state of StarEngine has no capability for that. It can only support scripted location based NPC’s. The ‘security’ that flies around are not NPC’s they are ships with scripted behaviours, the human NPC’s aboard those ships don’t do anything but sit there idling. They attempted shipboard NPC’s that would arrive, leave the ship and engage in fighting, but those NPC’s are still location based, they can’t decide to chase you around the star system or go through a Jump Gate. All current NPC’s are basically your bog standard CryEngine type scripted location based NPC’s with a very minimal set of idles and fight behaviours because Subsumption logic runs locally on game servers, there is no system for it to run seamlessly on server meshed game servers.
Even if they had unlimited funds they still could not recruit and train the veritable army of animators, AI script writers, mocap technicians etc to produce that NPC population at scale
I’m highly skeptical. 1.0 is a ‘game’ but it is not the game that was sold to us prior to 2024. It will not be a ‘Living Breathing Universe’ full of roaming autonomous goal seeking characters, it won’t even have NPC’s as ships crew.
What made me less optimistic was Richard Tyrer going on stage and finally admitting there is no way they will be able to do what they have expressed
death ain’t nothing but a spaceship away
I’m pledgin’ life do-or-die, uh, what can I say?
I’m 63 now, but will I live to see 1.0?
the way funding’s going I don’t know
oh this game is fun, lets pick our favorite part of the financial blog release
[…] but particularly with our development goals requiring us to introduce key new technology during the year into our live pre-alpha game. During the middle of the year this created technical issues (many not of our making), which impacted on the gaming experience and customer engagement. However, the nature of our open development also forced (and enabled) us to solve many of the key issues identified and we overcame them to finish the year stronger than ever, showcasing more new features we would soon be bringing to Star Citizen.
oh yes, all those technical issues (we didn’t create them though fyi)
but because they’re SO open with that open development model , it actually was a positive thing for us enabling us to finish stronger than ever (in terms of money spent)
look at all those cool new features we showcased! (but you can’t see or use in-game)
OUYA shipped and collapsed in what felt like a week. Star Citizen has spent over a decade to master the art of not launching. Always teasing, never imploding, somehow still fundraising.
It’s called financial gooning.
I did not give $8,500+ for a game project with no more playable features than I could have bought for $60
Go figure that their breaking point is some mundane multi-character account stuff that 99% of people wouldn’t care about.
I would have figured he’s in for more than five figures, so that’s a bit of a surprise.
I would be willing to bet all my internet points that he is busted up because he can’t make his promised AI harem.
Man Tony Z is such a winner, spent years taking in 6 figures while bullshitting about subsumption and quanta and whatnot and when it was clear it couldnt be implemented he took his shit and retired to some sunny paradise where he will spend the rest of his life drinking umbrella drinks
Every single rock in this rock garden thing is modeled, it’s not just a shader. That’s like 100,000 rocks with dozens of vertexes that need to be drawn. lol why would they do this instead of just using a texture.
no cut corners! CHRIS SAID SO WITH HIS ORIGINAL PITCH!
godddddd
Displacement maps make mesh triangles extruded from a texture. That will have depth that is indistinguishable from a separate object – you can even do collision against displacement maps if you really want.
The thing you can’t do with displacement maps is have undercuts. Like:
So if you could get very close to those pebbles and see that each one not only had height, but real separation from the surface with undercuts between the surface and the pebble, that would prove they’re a bunch of rock objects rather than a texture. But I think that will be difficult with tiny little rocks.
I mean I’m ready to believe that Chris Robberts demanded a zen garden with 1 million individual rocks that can be moved around with a rake in the Xian Embassy courtyard.
but if they did they’d make a video about it, and there’d be a $150 personal zen garden upgrade in the store
They have really gone wild in the store and have released the Idris and a bunch of pay 2 win packages for different ships.
The Idris sold out in minutes, there are still many years of laughs to be mined here.
You can now buy these ship-specific upgrades for real money.
It’s an item that makes your ship like 1% faster or more agile. That’ll be $80. Only works on the one specific ship type you buy it for.
lol. idk which one is worse: 500 dollars for a space toilet or 45 dollars so you can rent a space hotel room for 10 days. Or 45 dollars to get a npc to roam your base, while t-posing.
I figured it was fake because the carrot seeds are too affordable.
pay 2 win is a huge point of contention for the long term star citizen type
they have always been promised from day 0 there would be no pay 2 win .. ever.. absolutely
this is the very first time that CIG has blatantly slapped them in the face with their own pee-pee’s and said basically ‘who gives a shit we can do what we want now open your little wallets pay pigs’
I don’t get how they see a 30 dollar stat adjustment as pay to win but not a thousand dollar ship.
Fascinated by the idea of a person whose been totally fine with literally everything Star Citizen has done for the past 15 years but now THIS is just too far
Jfc even the mannequins look like they want out of this nightmare
Remember how they sold star citizens funding model as a way to get away from cash grabbing publishers making everything behind a pay wall??
Here we are 15+ years of alpha development, with some of the most aggressive and expensive monetization of any game ever.
I fell down a wiki rabbit hole and there is a whole section of the pledge store that isn’t viewable until you’ve sunk over $1k. The ship packs there range from $2250 to $25k.
Chris Roberts claimed years ago they had enough funding to finish both games. Now just getting to the finish line is costing $100,000,000 per year all paid for by backers with zero guarantee that either game will be finished or be the games we’ve been promised for over a decade. CIG have been given more than enough time and money to finish these games. It’s clear that claim was a lie and that the company and development is severely mismanaged. White knights need to stop pretending otherwise. Star Citizens development isn’t in the shitter because “games are hard” or that there’s no game like Star Citizen. There are actually plenty of similar games, but none that have been given a blank check to drag on development for half a decade longer than it should have.
Love the comments that go “how will CIG fund the game if they don’t do these things” like we have a personal responsibility to sustain whatever dumpster fire is happening
This is NOT same as SHIP being sold, then after a few months (3-4) being available in the game to be purchased.
This is ACTIVELY and INSTANTLY increasing performance of a ship and SHOULD NEVER be ALLOWED to be BOUGHT for money let alone NOT BE AVAILABLE INSTANTLY in game AT THE SAME TIME as the pledge store.
This is crazy how low CIG can go at this point. I personally wouldn’t even want this item ever in pledge store. It Defeats the “purpose of obtaining an enhancement in game and “cycle of obtaining and losing” game loop (economy etc), that these kinds of features brings.
I am quite disgusted by CIG
It is amazing to me that they are willing to piss off so many people to make $15.
I’m pleasantly shocked to see this sub turning on them. Came in here a couple years ago and the fanboys were rabid about any sort of criticism.
I finally convinced a friend to download the game after years and they pull this shit the next day.
After 13 years and a billion dollars, the only thing complete about this game is the online store.
People say that Spectrum is always mad, but not this mad. It’s like everyone logged in just to downvote this one post.
Edit: 5000 thumbs down emojis now
CIG doesn’t care about the state of the game or how well it plays for as long as I can remember. All the while claiming “it’s an alpha, it’s not gonna be perfect. But they sure as shit are gonna keep selling you $1000 ships on the regular. It wasn’t until some upper tier streamer showed how busted the game play was with thousands watching that they started to give a shit.
It’s got some of the best “potential” I’ve ever seen in a game, but considering they’ve fundraised half a billion and are still finding ways to open your wallet instead of just making a good game, I’ve very little faith in the game and its future.
Seriously I’m not kidding some of the big wigs at the company (after seeing the active player base continue to drop I imagine) finally said after watching this streamer continually falling into the elevator, maybe we should fix some of these issues for the 1st time in YEARS. It’s like they never played the game before ever!
It shows their main focus is monetization. Not making a great game. Year after year we get more and more expensive ships along with more and more bigger tech issues.
I’ve just lost faith in this game. It’s really sad. I hope they turn it around but not holding my breath
At this point, I’m just going to get rid of my account.
scamcitizen scams the citizens, who knew
Oh boy something else to buy. When can I buy tbe ability to not fall through elevators?
So, they are pissed at CIG for selling a thing that gives you a slight advantage with a ship. But they are ok with CIG selling ships, tens or hundreds time more expensive, that instantaneously and dramatically give you huge advantages in the game?
Peak SC right here!
The core “gameplay loop” of this game as it currently exist is to buy ships for real buckaroos. The moment the whales can’t stomach doing that the jig is up.
Relative to the ships, those blade things are cheap, they don’t want the poors dirtying up the place with their dollar tree dlc
1 - Tell your current staff what you want them to get done
2 - Fire anyone qualified/accomplished enough to say “That’s not possible to do, and anyone who tells you they can do that is either a fool or is lying to you”
3 - Repeat until everyone is either a fool or lying to you
4 - Wonder why the thing is somehow still not getting done
How long would it take someone to get back to that fight if they get blown up? Does their ship respawn?
Seems like battles that last for days wouldn’t get anywhere if everyone comes back after dying.
You get sent back to a planet, have to walk through one of Chris’s dumbass space malls, take a train, wait out the respawn timer for your ship, take an elevator, get back in your ship, and then fly back to wherever the battle is taking place.
The you have to ask yourself what the point of that battle even is? Because, the game has no mechanics for Orgs to control territory/resources, so you’re just EVE LARPing the whole time.
not a penny you will see until I purchase my Idris
You’re using FOMO marketing tactics with these limited “waves” and extremely restricted Idris inventory, and it’s causing serious issues. This approach is fueling a black market and encouraging players to resort to Python scripts and bots just to gain an advantage over those of us who play fairly
at this rate ai will improve enough to develop star citizen before cig do lol
They would unironically be going faster if they were using AI. I’m told it’s common practice for senior software engineers at this point.
Though of course if they don’t proofread the code it would be buggy as hell so I wouldn’t put it past them.
3rd attempt at this. Wake up in room, get on train, must be wrong train, this is confusing. Spent 40 minutes figuring out how to get from gate4 to gate5 to gate6. The subway stations could have better names. Explore barren parking lot outside one of them, run around a lot, don’t find anything.
Eventually get back to station I started at, find right train to spaceport, I’m not making this up, start to die of thirst. Embarrassed so don’t ask for help in chat, don’t want to be laughed at by Citizens. At 10% hydro realism I figure I’m to have to ask for help as can’t find a shop at the spaceport and those two vending machines I recognize from 10 years ago don’t appear to do anything. Only now immersion has kicked in and I can’t read chat anymore.
Die of thirst next to unhelpful npc, wake up in hospital bed, inject myself with all the drugs but nothing funny happens.
Find a bar and spend 10 minutes trying to buy a drink from the bartender, finally manage to get a bottle of beer, try to drink it, fail badly, I think I threw it across the room. Log out as that’s enough fun for today.
Sounds like games not out yet, give it another two weeks?
